UK guttering professionals are finding that botched DIY jobs are causing expensive repairs, according to a nationwide study by plumbing and drainage manufacturer Wavin Osma.

The new study found that almost all (99%) of professionals say they’ve been called out to fix botched DIY repair jobs carried out by homeowners.

In fact, nearly a quarter of professionals (24%) report that poor or incorrect installation of guttering systems is one of the leading causes of guttering problems in the UK.

Professionals identified common DIY mistakes, such as blockages caused by temporary fixes with tape or fillers (48%), incorrectly fitted joints or connectors (48%) and using materials not designed for gutters (43%), as the top three issues they encounter on the job.

Left unaddressed, professionals warn that these issues could lead to costly repairs and, if untreated, significant damage to the home including leaks, sagging, and long-term structural damage, often costing more to fix than a professional installation would have in the first place.

Installation Errors

Even when DIY’ers are using the correct equipment, professionals are reporting installation errors as another leading cause behind a rise in callouts. Nearly one in four professionals (24%) point to gutters that have the wrong capacity or have too few brackets, and a similar number (23%) see improper installation. Almost a quarter (22%) say homeowners are also using the wrong type of guttering system for their property altogether.

Steve Skeldon, Above Ground Product Managerat Wavin said: “Homeowners have faced unprecedented stress over the last few years amid the cost-of-living crisis. Combine that with record high levels of rainfall, and it is understandable why homeowners may turn to DIY fixes as a cost-effective option for repairs.

“However, to avoid costly repairs down the line, it is important to seek advice from a qualified professional when you feel that your gutter may need maintenance or repairs.”

Getting it Right

Choosing the right gutter profile and capacity is essential for delivering durable, reliable installations that help prevent overflow, blockages and long‑term damage. The Wavin Osma guttering range offers six robust distinct profiles suitable for residential, commercial and industrial projects, making it easier for tradespeople to select the perfect fit for any job.

Designed for performance and ease of installation, Osma systems feature advanced hydrodynamic running outlets that handle up to 30% more rainwater than traditional systems, along with extra‑wide retained seals to ensure secure, watertight joints that allow for thermal movement.
