Read the latest magazine Industry News Metal Roofs Bids Invited for New Aluminium Standing Seam Toroidal Roof 10 November 2020 DIAMOND LIGHT SOURCE wishes to appoint a contractor to replace the toroidal (ring shaped) roof of the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire. The existing, Kalzip aluminium standing seam roof of the synchrotron building, which houses a national scientific research facility, is starting to deteriorate due to thermal movement. The total roof area is approximately 32,000 m2 and comprises of 96 bays. Each bay includes both parallel and welded tapered and curved sheets, giving the building its toroidal shape. It was installed by Lakesmere in 2006 before the company folded in 2017. Lakesmere’s main contractor, Costain, has made a £10million provision for remedial works in accordance with an arbitration ruling. Toroidal Roof The building’s owners are seeking tenders to replace the roof with a new aluminium standing seam installation, together with solar photovoltaic cells. The project notice says the contractor can either be a specialist roofing contractor who is able to undertake the principal contractor duties under the Construction (Design and Management) regulations 2015. Alternatively, it could be a general or main contractor who will undertake the principal contractor role and subcontract the roof works to a specialist roofing contractor (either in-house or externally). An OJEU notice for the project has been issued to undertake the works under the NEC3 design and build form of contract. The time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate ends on 4th December 2020.
