New Slate Roof for Heritage School

THE EXTENSIVE roof replacement of a Grade II listed school in Rotherham is now complete.

NRA Roofing was appointed as the specialist contractor to carry out the work, which required a skilled approach to ensure that the new roof provided both long-lasting durability and aesthetic harmony with the original design.

A total of 4,750 linear metres of SR Timber’s quality-graded roofing battens and 30,000 Welsh slates were used on the roof of Thomas Rotherham College’s Woodhurst building, covering an area of 500 square metres.

The primary task involved the removal of the existing slate and the installation of new materials, carefully selected to maintain the integrity of the heritage site while adhering to its original slate design.

AccuRoof, part of SIG Roofing, were involved in the early stages of this project, working with NRA Roofing on the material requirement. The new roof is composed of Welsh slates from the Cwt Y Bugail quarry, supplied by SIG Roofing, which was selected for its quality and aesthetic appeal.

This was laid onto a foundation that included a breathable membrane and SR Timber Premium Gold-graded roofing batten, for enhanced durability. Increased insulation also upgraded the thermal performance of the property. To ensure proper airflow and ventilation, counter battens were fitted, and the TLX Batsafe breather membrane was applied, contributing to an improved U-value.

The SR Timber PREMIUM GOLD^® roofing batten was specified as it meets the specifications outlined in BS 8417:2011+A1:2014 (preservation of timber) and is graded according to BS 5534:2014+A2:2018. Additionally, it is one of the few battens that has passed assessment by the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

The durability of Welsh slate, combined with the roofing expertise and craftsmanship provided by NRA Roofing experts, ensures that the roof will last at least 75 years, much like its Victorian predecessor.
