A SURVEY taken across all sectors has revealed that 6 in 10 employees believe they could do a better job than their boss or direct line manager. Findings included:

  • 83% of construction employees agreed “Yes, I would make a better boss.”
  • 78% of 45-54-year olds think they’d do a better job.
  • 60% of 21-34-year olds believed they could do a better job than their boss.

500 UK employees took part in the survey, conducted by bgo.com. The largest segment that responded ‘yes’ when asked if they could do a superior job to their boss were those in the construction sector, at 83%.

Better Boss

The survey covered all levels of management. While there were several members of upper management who believed they would make a better boss, entry level respondents in the construction industry also felt confident enough to take over as boss, despite a lack of experience.

Jeremy Fletcher, of change-management consultancy Transform Finance,
believes that the answer may lie in perception: “Employees are often not exposed to the full range of their boss’s role, nor the pressures or constraints that they are under. This lack of visibility can make a job look far easier than it actually is.”

Being unaware of what a boss or line manager does in detail leads to a belief that they would be able to do a better job. This could explain why many respondents believed they would perform better than their boss.
