Being ‘Green’ Puts Care ‘In The Pink’
Capacity to care is on the increase with completion of a new, ‘green’ home in Edinburgh.
The £8million, 80-bedroomed, two-storey Manor Grange is billed as being state of the art in delivery of luxury, ‘whole life’ nursing care in a home from home environment, in the leafy Edinburgh suburb of Pinkhill, overlooking the local golf course.
Its location prompted designers Yeoman McAllister Architects to specify a green roof. Budgetary constraints have led to contractor Hart Builders and roofing subcontractor Strathisla Roofing to devise an innovative solution - use of Protan single ply membrane in copper green.
Over 1700m2 of Protan SE1.6mm standard overlap has been mechanically fixed to the metal deck to create the fifth façade.
Explained Strathisla’s Kevin Easson: “A living green roof was originally specified but, to meet budgets, we had to come up with an alternative. The local planners insisted the roof should be green, to blend in with the surrounding landscape. The fact we could order Protan membrane in verdigris green as a standard colour enabled us to value engineer a viable alternative that still provided the ‘green’ aesthetic!”
Designed to cope with extreme weather conditions without detriment, Protan SE membranes achieve durability for up to 30 years. In addition, air leakage is controlled in line with the latest Building Regulations.
Protan SE membrane is one element of Protan’s comprehensive range of single ply roofing solutions covered on the company's website, all designed to protect value for specifier and contractor.
Tested and certified
Manufactured at the company's headquarters in Norway, Protan roofing solutions have been independently tested and certified by the BBA as having an expected durability in excess of 30 years. This is supported by the fact the company has roofs that have been in place for 30-plus years without performance-affecting degradation. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and training, is provided from Protan UK's Warrington office.
