Roofing Contractors, Employers and Trainers – Have Your Say!

A new draft standard for roofing apprenticeships has been created and the writers want to know what you think about it.

The new standard for the roofing apprenticeship has been produced under the government’s Trailblazer Apprenticeship scheme. Trailblazers are new apprenticeship standards devised by a group of employers for specific occupations within their industry. They allow employers to create a workforce with the skills their industry needs.

Now that the draft Trailblazer Apprenticeship for Roofing standard has been developed, the next step is to move onto a Consultation with the wider roofing industry, roofing contractors and training providers, in order to establish demand, as well as the standard’s quality and relevance.

The writers want to ensure that the Consultation is inclusive and all stakeholders participate to provide feed-back.

The Consultation will close on Sunday 5th June 2016.

The NFRC- led Apprenticeship Employers Group has developed the draft trailblazer standard for roofing, which has been written to meet the BIS criteria:

  • Apprenticeship standards must be short, concise, accessible documents. They must describe skills, knowledge and competency required for a specific occupation.
  • Describe what full competence for a specific occupation means so that, on completion, an apprentice will have the skills, knowledge, behaviour and confidence to perform the role in any part if the sector.
  • The new standard must be publicly recognised by employers (including SMEs).
  • The new standard must be suitable for small businesses to use to train their apprentices, if necessary with external training.
  • The standard must contain sufficient content and be pitched at such a level, that a new entrant to the occupation would find it stretching and require at least one year to meet the standard.
  • The standard must specify the level of English and Maths achievements required, whether this is the minimum level required by Government for all apprenticeships or a level above this minimum set by the Trailblazer.
  • The new standards may specify any mandatory qualifications to be achieved by all apprentices as a pre-requisite to taking the end-point assessment. (Skills test).
